PGM Trading 2022 – Reflections and Outlook

Join us as we reflect on the highs and lows of the platinum group metals market this past year from the perspective of three outstanding PGM specialists. Rhona, Head of Market Analysis at StoneX, will briefly unpack the key global macro factors that have driven the market during most of the past year. Next up, Joni Teves, Precious Metals Strategist at UBS, will incorporate how Western led challenges impacted Asian buying behaviour and vice versa. Elizabeth Scott, Precious Metals Sales Origination at HSBC, will then reflect on how market events have affected end-user and consumer buying patterns.

SPEAKER – Rhona O’Connell

Rhona O’Connell has over 35 years’ experience as a metals markets analyst and is a recognized authority in the precious metals sector. She has worked in a number of aspects of the industry, including the mining sector (gold giant Consolidated Gold Fields, including feasibility studies for a sliver project and for what became the Northam Platinum mine in South Africa), commodities broking at Rudolf Wolff where she was a major contributor to Wolff’s Guide to the London Metal Exchange, for the World Gold Council, in the equity markets and investment banking. In the latter role she was the Precious Metals analyst at Shearson Lehman, where she was responsible for advising or supporting a range of market participants from trading through equities to corporate finance.
She has held Extel ranking (2nd place) in the gold sector, has been the Association of Mining Analysts Commodities Analyst of the year and has a high media and public speaking profile. Rhona came to StoneX after a number of years working with metals analysts GFMS, latterly managing a team of over 20 analysts. She holds an honours degree in Law from the University of Cambridge.

SPEAKER – Joni Teves

Joni Teves is the Precious Metals Strategist within the UBS Economics and Strategy Research team, and is based in Singapore. She covers all four precious metals and is responsible for fundamental analysis, forecasting, and writing research pieces on these markets. She has been in the industry for 16 years, initially as a gold trader for the central bank of the Philippines, subsequently joining UBS as a precious metals strategist in 2011. UBS Precious Metals Research has been consistently voted #1 by clients in the Risk Magazine Survey since 2012. Joni holds a BS Business Economics degree from the University of the Philippines.

SPEAKER – Elizabeth Scott

Elizabeth Scott works in Precious Metals Sales Origination at HSBC is based in London, covering the EMEA region. She has over 7 years of experience across financial services, joining HSBC in 2014 as a Commercial Banking graduate before moving into Markets and Securities Services in 2016, where she covered FX for commercial clients and has spent the past two years in Precious Metals. Elizabeth covers a wide range of clients including; autos, petrochemical companies, refiners, central banks and hedge funds. Elizabeth received a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance and Economics from the University of East Anglia.
